A wood boiler is a heating appliance used to heat water for central heating, domestic hot water and even swimming pools and hot tubs, by the combustion of wood, wood pellets or wood chip. Generally they are manufactured from cast iron or steel.
Wood boilers are classed as a renewable energy product. They are becoming more popular in the home due to the ever increasing cost in fossil fuel prices.
There are different kinds of wood boilers but the main principle is the same. Basically the water in the boiler is heated to a set temperature then a circulating pump is energised via a thermostat that measures the temperature of the water or the temperature of the chimney. The hot water is then circulated to a radiator system, hot water cylinder, buffer/accumulator tank or heat exchanger.
Another method of transferring the heat is via a thermo-syphoning system which does not require a circulation pump. The hot water produced by the boiler rises , creating natural convection allowing the water to circulate to a cylinder or radiator sited above the boiler.
The different kinds of wood boilers can range from a wood or pellet boiler stove that can be installed into living accommodation. For larger properties wood gasification or wood pellet boilers maybe more suitable, they are generally installed into an out building or utility room.
